At the heart of Pietrasanta, an apartment preserves the patina of long inhabitation, layering past and present. Materials and light guide movement through intimate, suspended spaces, where architecture and objects coexist.
The apartment sits atop a complex building, its plan shaped by former lofts, a staircase, and an old loggia. The project amplifies this character: windows frame views, low ceilings and steps mark a gradual conquest of space. Interventions rely on what already existed. Surfaces were treated in situ: silver leaf highlights the central sequence of doors; powder-pink pigmented concrete links bathroom and kitchen; an earthen volume defines the bedroom. The kitchen platform is suspended from the ceiling and incorporates a marble block, extending into a second lifted element above the stairwell to connect three rooms. Walls are painted dove-gray. Minimal custom furnishings respond to an essentialist logic: metal mesh pantry, two suspended benches that open like boat lockers, and a wardrobe hidden by a curtain. Movement through the apartment reveals materials progressively, from concrete stair steps to pigmented rooms, then terracotta bedroom, and finally the loft with exposed stone walls and dark wooden ceilings. Every space fosters intimacy: the kitchen offers elevated views over the sea, the stairwell doubles as reading nook, and small objects and sculptures are displayed on black-burned wood shelves, emphasizing a tactile, contemplative inhabitation.
