At Palazzo Alberti, Sansepolcro, Gastone Lanfredini’s posthumous exhibition traces a century of exploration from figurative to concrete abstraction, revealing preparatory studies and the subtle poetry behind his work. Simplicity and complexity coexist through minimal structures and materials.
The exhibition unfolds across five rooms, guiding visitors through Lanfredini’s evolution. The central hall presents his painting trajectory from early figurative works to mature abstraction, highlighting both the intensity of tempera and the ironic, vivid depictions of daily life and nature. Figures and flora emerge with playful tension, gradually giving way to geometric compositions where harmony and mathematical proportions condense the visible and the knowable. In the sketch room, preparatory studies from 1975–2005 reveal the meticulous planning behind each work: compositional calculations, material notes, and repeated poetic annotations document the artist’s creative process. The sound room evokes Casa Lanfredini, linking painting and musicality through a custom soundtrack, creating an immersive synesthetic experience. The ink room restores attention to the surrounding world, with postcards and tiny ink dots translating daily observations into visual contemplation. The final contemplation room presents a single work on a smooth panel, encouraging close, reflective engagement. Exposed scaffolds, raw spruce panels, poplar plywood, and lead-free glass underpin the display, emphasizing the constructive complexity behind a pursuit of essence: profound, deliberate simplicity.
