In Gavinana, Florence, an apartment for two journalists organises life around two material capsules: a green bathroom and an earthy kitchen. Minimal interventions create a flexible, inhabitable framework rooted in natural materials.
The apartment opens onto a rear garden and a central light well. Its structure was subtly reorganised, defining two key blocks (bathroom and kitchen) enclosed within a continuous oak cabinet. The bathroom is hidden behind a mirrored panel, while the kitchen extends into a glazed wall unit. Circular apertures in the light well, 55 centimetres in diameter, pivot open to frame external views. Three rooms feature fixed furnishings along a single wall, integrated with the central cabinet: a bed with a large headboard and a bookshelf composed of roughly hewn oak shelves on storage blocks. Sliding doors with hidden tracks and solid wood slats refine the details, while natural light and simple finishes enhance the minimal framework. The apartment allows for flexible living, with movable furniture, sofas, and personal objects added over time. The intervention establishes a basic yet comfortable substrate for existence, immersing occupants in tones of green, earth, and natural wood, without precluding future adaptations.
