Above Fiesole, a glazed studio captures Florence under shifting light. Interventions blend refined materiality and subtle geometry, preserving the spirit of a painter’s atelier.
The space, formerly a painter’s studio, occupies a four-sided glass volume with a sloped floor following the roof’s pitch. Vertical enclosures were renewed with new glass and dark lime plaster for stepped infills. The entrance area, inspired by the doma of Japanese architecture, features irregular abete floorboards with inlaid beech accents. Floorboards form steps and concealed storage boxes with recessed handles. Thin plywood ceiling slats weave like a basket, aligning with the view. Inside, a rusted iron portal frames the studio, a large custom desk defines the workspace, and a perforated, backlit storage panel projects distant city lights into the interior at night. The design balances functional clarity with poetic spatial gestures, enhancing the studio’s dialogue with light, view, and material detail.
